As more companies invest in LGBTQ inclusion and gender-inclusive workplaces, pronouns have become a significant focal point. From pronouns listed on email signatures and business cards to pronoun buttons worn by retail employees, the business community has quickly embraced these practices. 

Utilizing inclusive pronoun practices in the workplace is vital in building organizational cultures of respect and belonging not just for the LGBTQ community, but for anyone who in some way challenges the traditional model of gender identity and expression. Out & Equal released a guide, What’s Your Pronoun? Strategies for Inclusion in the Workplace, to support employers’ understanding of the intersection of daily communications, pronoun usage, gender identity, and expression at work, as well as practical strategies for inclusion.Out & Equal receives constant inquiries from employers on how other companies have integrated pronouns within daily operations. At Southern California Edison some of us have started using the pronouns in our email signature and some of us have taken it a step further by also hyperlinking to an article by Williams. We have received positive feedback from our CEO that noticed it and let us know he felt like he learned more about pronouns because of the linked information.

At TE Connectivity, we encourage employees to voluntarily share their pronouns as part of their email signature. In the IT organization, we have all of our “From the Office of [senior leader]” announcements include their pronouns with their signature. Working to replicate that approach across other parts of the company.
